Let This Grieving Soul Retire! Anime Review: Plot, Characters & Seasons

Have you ever lied on your resume and actually got the job? Now imagine that, but the job involves leading a guild of terrifyingly overpowered monster hunters, and all you really want to do is go home and sleep.

That's exactly what you get with Let This Grieving Soul Retire! (Nageki no Bōrei wa Intai Shitai). It's a hilarious fantasy anime that takes the whole "misunderstanding" trope and cranks it up to a hundred. If you're completely burned out on serious Isekai and just want a show filled with pure comedy, stress-induced vomiting, and absolute chaos, this one is definitely for you.

📌 Quick Facts: At a Glance

  • Series Name: Let This Grieving Soul Retire!
  • Genres: Animation, Action, Adventure, Comedy
  • IMDb Rating: 6.4/10
  • Stars (Voice Cast): Kenshô Ono, Satoshi Inomata, Hiroshi Nakamura
  • Creator: N/A (Based on the Light Novel by Tsukikage)

What's the Plot?

The story follows Krai Andrey and his five childhood friends. Growing up, they made a promise to become the greatest treasure hunters in the world. Fast forward a few years, and five of those friends have basically become absolute monsters in combat, magic, and agility.

And then there's Krai.

Krai has absolutely zero talent. He's completely powerless and realizes pretty quickly that the whole treasure-hunting lifestyle isn't for him. But before he can actually quit, his wildly overpowered friends force him to be the leader of their legendary clan, "First Steps."

Thanks to an unbelievable string of dumb luck, wild coincidences, and his friends literally destroying everything in their path, the entire world somehow believes Krai is a genius mastermind known as "Thousand Tricks." Everyone thinks he's playing 4D chess, while in reality, he's just trying to avoid getting brutally beaten by low-level slimes.

How Many Seasons Are There? (A Quick Watch Guide)

Right now, the anime is fully wrapped up with two complete seasons (24 episodes total), making it an awesome weekend binge. Here's what you can expect without getting into heavy spoilers:

  • Season 1 (The Accidental Genius): This season perfectly sets up the main joke. We watch Krai get shoved into the leader role against his will. The main conflict is just him trying to secretly sabotage his own reputation so he can finally retire. Naturally, every single attempt backfires, and he accidentally solves massive city-ending threats by doing absolutely nothing. The more he tries to quit, the more famous he gets.
  • Season 2 (Suffering from Success): Season 2 really ramps up the ridiculousness. Now that Krai is globally recognized as an unstoppable tactician, the enemies coming after him are way deadlier, and the stakes are much higher. The comedy hits even harder here because Krai's internal panic is at an all-time high, while his loyal party members just keep blindly executing his "master plans" (which usually just consist of him trying to run away).

Is It Worth Watching?

100%. Let This Grieving Soul Retire! isn't trying to be some deep, philosophical masterpiece, and it knows that. It's a highly entertaining, character-driven comedy. The real suspense doesn't come from whether the main character will beat the bad guy, but rather how Krai is going to accidentally fake his way out of yet another life-threatening misunderstanding.

If you're a fan of shows like The Eminence in Shadow or Tearmoon Empire, you'll feel right at home with this one.
